Student Project

Graphic Design, Brand Identity

Worked as part of a team to create a brand identity for a live business Rank & File.

As a team we researched the client, visiting the theatre's weekly practice and a meeting, asking members about the organisation and their values.

We all generated concepts, sketching different potential avenues for the project. After iteratively improving the concepts, ultimately it was my idea, sketch and development that was proposed to the client.

The outcome played on the idea of an ampersand bringing words together, and the Rank & File organisation bringing people together. The ampersand was dynamic and radical, representing both the creativity of the organisation, but also their strive for social change.

Background

Rank & File are a Theatre of Sanctuary in Berkshire that works with refugees, abuse survivors, and people with disabilities through theatre, film and writing. Rank & File allows people to develop skills, access education and build friendships with others who have had similar or different struggles in their lives.

Research

Our very initial research started with visiting the organisations website and social media to gain a basic understanding of their goals and values. Upon this understanding we categorised the brand archetypes, gaining a deeper understanding of the organisation ahead of meeting the client. We then attended Rank & File's meetings, talking to the founder and attendees, discussing their values and hopes for Rank & File's future, as well as simply experiencing the organisation.
Brand archetype chart, identifying Rank & File as primarily a 'Caregiver'  organisation, with additional archetypes of 'Creator' and 'Everyman'
Sketching

Upon gaining a solid understanding of the company we moved forward to sketching. I focused many of my concepts on the ampersand, using it as a primary visual device.
